Best Soil, Climate and Rainfall for Red Sandal Cultivation

Red sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) wants well-drained red gravelly loam, 800–1,000 mm of annual rainfall, a hot dry climate with no frost, and full sun. It is a light-demanding, drought-hardy species that will fail faster in waterlogged fertile soil than in poor dry soil.

But there's a catch that most plantation guides skip entirely, and it is the single most important thing on this page: the conditions that grow the biggest tree are not the conditions that grow the most valuable wood. Understanding that distinction is the difference between a plantation that pays and a plantation that produces firewood.


Growing the tree versus growing the wood

Red sandalwood has almost no commercial value as timber volume. Its value sits entirely in the dark red heartwood at the core of the trunk — and specifically in the grain of that heartwood.

Two forms occur in nature: straight grained and wavy grained. The wavy grained variant carries a substantial price premium, is graded as "A" grade, and is the material sought for musical instruments in Japan because of its acoustic properties. Straight grained wood sells, but at a fraction of the price.

Grain formation is not random and it is not something you choose at the nursery. It appears to be driven by site. Wavy grain is associated with trees grown on shale subsoils, at altitudes around 750 metres, under semi-arid conditions — in other words, under a degree of environmental stress.

This inverts the intuition most farmers bring to a new crop. Heavy irrigation, rich soil and pampering will give you a tall tree quickly. The species is genuinely fast growing when young and can reach 5 m in three years even on degraded soil. But fast vegetative growth is not what you are selling. You are selling slowly accumulated, dense, dark heartwood, and that accumulates under conditions closer to hardship than luxury.

Plan your site for wood quality first and growth rate second.


Soil

What the species wants

Well-drained red soils with gravelly loam. That phrase comes from the standard package of practices and it is worth unpacking, because each word is doing work.

  • Red soils — the ferruginous lateritic and red loam soils of the Deccan and the Eastern Ghats tract.
  • Gravelly — a coarse fraction in the profile. Gravel content is a feature, not a defect. It keeps the profile open and stops water sitting around the root collar.
  • Loam — enough fines to hold some moisture and nutrients, without becoming heavy.
  • Well-drained — the non-negotiable one.

The tree develops a strong deep taproot. It needs a profile it can drive that root down through. Shallow soil over an impermeable pan, or a heavy black cotton soil that cracks in summer and turns to porridge in the monsoon, is the wrong site regardless of what else is favourable.

Drainage: the cheapest test you will ever run

Before committing to a site, dig a hole roughly a foot deep and fill it with water. If it drains away within 24 hours, drainage is adequate. If water is still standing after a day, the site will cause root problems and you should either drain it properly or plant something else.

Run this test at several points across the plot, not one. Drainage varies enormously within a single field, and the low corner that holds water is where you will lose trees.

pH and soil testing

Published guidance ranges from slightly acidic to around neutral. Rather than aim at a number from an article, get an actual soil test before planting and take the recommendation for your specific profile. A test should report texture, pH, organic carbon, available N-P-K, and — critically for this species — depth to any hardpan or rock and the drainage class.

That soil test report is also part of your documentation trail. It evidences that basic agricultural operations were planned and performed on the land, which matters later for both regulatory and tax purposes.

The question every serious grower should ask

Here is the uncomfortable part, and you will not find it on most plantation sales pages.

Red sanders is endemic to a very specific geology — the Cuddapah (Kadapa) basin formation of the southern Eastern Ghats, with its quartzite and shale sedimentary soils. Experienced growers in the tract report that trees planted well outside this formation grow perfectly healthy foliage and reasonable height, but fail to develop commercially useful heartwood, ending up as fuel wood after fifteen years of investment.

Be clear about the status of this claim: it is widely repeated by practitioners in Andhra Pradesh, it is consistent with the species' extremely narrow natural endemism, and it is consistent with what is known about site-driven grain formation. It is not, as far as published research goes, a settled and quantified rule, and successful plantations do exist outside the core tract.

But the asymmetry matters. If the claim is wrong and you plant inside the tract, you lose nothing. If the claim is right and you plant outside it, you lose fifteen years. Ask any operator selling you a plot directly: where is this land relative to the Cuddapah formation, and what heartwood evidence exists from mature trees grown on comparable soil nearby? An honest operator will engage with the question. Treat evasion as an answer.


Rainfall

Optimal range: 800–1,000 mm annually.

The species regenerates well in a dry, hot climate. The tolerance band is wider than the optimum — production technology guidance from Tamil Nadu cites a workable range of roughly 350–1,150 mm — but 800–1,000 mm is where growth and wood formation are reported to be best.

What matters as much as the total is the distribution and the drainage. Red sandalwood is drought hardy and handles a long dry season without difficulty. What it does not handle is standing water. A site receiving 1,400 mm on free-draining gravelly slope may be less risky than a site receiving 900 mm on flat ground with a clay pan at two feet.

Irrigation

Rainfall alone will rarely carry the establishment phase. Standard practice:

  • Irrigate immediately after transplanting
  • Alternate days for the first 15 days
  • Thereafter every 10–15 days depending on weather, until established
  • Under drip, roughly 3–4 litres per seedling, about three times a week in the early stage

Drip is strongly preferred over flood — it delivers water to the root zone without saturating the profile, which is exactly the balance this species needs. After around eight years the trees are largely self-sufficient and irrigation can be tapered off substantially.

Note the trade-off implied by everything above: irrigation shortens time to harvest, but the semi-arid stress associated with premium wavy grain is partly a water stress. Over-irrigating a mature plantation to accelerate growth may be trading wood grade for years.


Temperature, frost and sunlight

Frost is the hard limit. Red sandalwood is not frost tolerant and is killed by temperatures of around −1°C. This single fact rules out large parts of northern and high-altitude India regardless of how good the soil looks. If your site records frost even occasionally, this is not your species.

At the other end it is comfortable. It thrives in hot, semi-arid conditions and tolerates the high summer temperatures typical of the Rayalaseema districts without stress.

It is a light-demanding species. It will not perform under shade. Full open sun, and enough spacing that neighbouring canopies do not close over young trees prematurely. Do not plant it as an understorey under an existing canopy.


Altitude

Around 750 metres is the elevation associated with wavy grain formation on shale subsoils. The species occurs naturally through the hill tracts of the southern Eastern Ghats.

This does not mean lower elevations fail — plantations exist well below 750 m — but altitude appears to be one of the site variables feeding into wood quality rather than survival. Treat it as a quality factor, not a pass/fail one.


Where in India this actually maps to

The natural tract is the southern Eastern Ghats, principally the districts of Kadapa, Kurnool, Chittoor, Anantapur, Prakasam and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. This is where the species is endemic, where the geology suits it, and where the accumulated cultivation knowledge sits.

Suitable conditions exist elsewhere in peninsular India — parts of Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu offer the right rainfall, temperature and soil texture. The further you move from the core tract, the more weight the heartwood question above deserves.

Planting geometry and establishment

Once the site checks out, the standard package:

  • Land preparation: plough and harrow repeatedly to a fine tilth
  • Pits: 45 × 45 × 45 cm
  • Spacing: 4 m × 4 m, giving roughly 600 plants per hectare (about 250 per acre). Some growers use 12 ft × 12 ft, giving around 300 per acre
  • Pit filling: topsoil mixed with 10–15 kg of farmyard manure per pit
  • Planting material: stumps or stump-raised seedlings from two-year-old nursery stock
  • Planting time: end of May to June, at the onset of the monsoon
  • Weed control: keep the plantation weed-free for the first two years so young trees are not competing for moisture and nutrients

On propagation: seed is the standard planting material and retains viability for roughly a year under normal storage. Germination is improved by seed treatment — a GA₃ and benzyladenine soak at around 250 ppm, or as a low-cost alternative, soaking in cold water or cow dung slurry for 72 hours.

On intercropping: crops can be grown between rows until the canopy closes, which is worth planning deliberately given the long wait to harvest. No intercropping system has been formally studied and standardised for this species, so treat it as something to design with local agronomic advice rather than copy from a template.

On pests: leaf-eating caterpillars are the main reported problem, typically appearing around April and May. Some older cultivation guides circulating online still recommend monocrotophos for this. Do not follow decade-old pesticide recommendations from web articles — monocrotophos is a highly hazardous compound subject to significant restrictions. Get a current recommendation from your state agriculture department or a qualified agronomist for a molecule that is approved today.


A note on expected yield

Site quality determines yield, so it belongs here. Be careful with the numbers circulating online, which vary by more than an order of magnitude.

Production technology guidance from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University sources cites 10–18 kg of heartwood per tree at 15–20 years. Other sources online claim figures in the hundreds of kilograms per tree, and some plantation marketing material claims over a tonne.

Those numbers cannot all be right. A tree that reaches around 10 m in height with a 50–150 cm trunk diameter, of which only the inner heartwood core is saleable, does not yield a tonne of heartwood at fifteen years. Build your expectations on the conservative published figures, ask any operator to show you actual weighed harvest data from mature trees rather than projections, and treat the gap between the two as your risk.
